Welcome to BWild's Food Waste Journey

In 2019, after discovering the truth about food waste and climate change, BWild designed a Table-to-Farm program aimed at helping Salt Lake residents reduce their weekly trash production by preventing undesirable organic material from joining the typical waste stream. Our goal was to upcycle these “discards”, via a partnership with Wasatch Resource Recovery, into a new life as bio-fertilizer and "green" natural gas, biomethane. For more information on the process, download the PDF (below) and/or visit wasatchresourcerecovery.com.

We ran into some hiccups with our original pilot project, but we won't stop there! We are currently exploring any and all possibilities for upcyling food waste and welcome your input! For information on the Upcycled Food movement visit www.upcycledfood.org

Did you know that many residents in the Salt Lake region can compost fruits, veggies,  coffee grinds, and more by purchasing a yard waste bin? Contact your local waste provider to learn more!

Why Compost Food Waste?

A study by Project Drawdown, a coalition of experts focused on climate change solutions, ranks reducing food waste as the No. 3 action item out of 80

From the USDA website: "In the United States, food waste is estimated between 30 - 40% of the nation's food supply. This estimate corresponded to approximately 133 billion pounds and $161 billion worth of food in 2010.

This amount of waste has far-reaching impacts on food security, resource conservation and climate change:

  • Wholesome food that could have helped feed families in need is sent to landfills.
  • The land, water, labor, energy and other inputs used in producing, processing, transporting, preparing, storing, and disposing of discarded food are pulled away from uses that may have been more beneficial to society – and generate impacts on the environment that may endanger the long-run health of the planet.
  • Food waste, which is the single largest component going into landfills generates methane, helping to make landfills the third largest source of methane in the US."

In 2019, Salt Lake City residents have a fantastic new option in their responsibility for local and global environmental issues.

With Wasatch Resource Recovery's new biodigester coming online, Salt Lake City residents no longer have to bury what they cannot personally use anymore.

BWild Table-to-Farm makes it possible to

  • cut your airborne pollutants
  • reduce your garbage production
  • conserve everyone's fossil fuels
  • create renewable "green" natural gas!

30-40% of typical household discards are energy-rich and can now be converted to fuel and fertilizer.

Please don't throw away options for a cleaner future!  Organic "waste" is like the opposite of oil; don't bury resources back underground!
